Restricted Vienna: Documenting the History of Racial Covenants and Workshopping their Removal
6:30 p.m. at the Vienna Community Center
As a part of the fifth annual Liberty Amendments Month, learn about the history of housing discrimination and the role that racial covenants played in the Town of Vienna and in Fairfax County in a lecture and workshop led by Dr. Krystyn Moon, professor of history and American studies at Mary Washington University. Georgia Brown from the Fairfax County Circuit Courts Historic Records will share information about how to research land records in the historic court archives.
In the workshop that follows speakers and staff from the Fairfax County Circuit Court and Tengco Law PLLC will assist you in researching your property and filling out the necessary paperwork to remove racial restrictions from your land records. A form will be provided to workshop participants in advance to ensure a smooth process. No land records or deeds are required to participate in the workshop and the workshop portion is optional for attendees.
Wondering if your property has a racial covenant? Dr. Moon and her researcher partners have compiled an interactive map that identifies subdivisions that had racial covenants and reveals the language in each covenant.
