CSC Green Expo April 2025

Plant guidance, live animals and expert tips on sustainable practices are among the attractions at this year’s Green Expo on Thursday, April 24, 2025, from 7-9 p.m. at the Vienna Community Center, 120 Cherry St., SE, Vienna, Va.  More than 30 local exhibitors will be on hand with information about native plants and other green landscaping ideas, composting, recycling, energy efficiency, solar power, water conservation, wildlife conservation and more.

The popular “Ask Me Anything” sessions are back featuring local experts who will make brief presentations and then take questions from attendees. This year’s topics include recycling right and reducing waste, led by town residents Mala Persaud, owner of Trace, The Zero-Waste Store, and Susan Stillman, who built and is living in her solar-powered and highly energy-efficient home.

A family favorite returning this year will be wildlife experts from the nonprofit volunteer group Secret Garden Birds & Bees who will show live birds of prey. Children’s activities will also keep the kids entertained while adults get money-saving tips on green practices.

For more information about the Green Expo, email CSC@viennava.gov.

Spring Native Plant Sale

Head to the Vienna Community Center on Saturday, May 3, from 8am-12pm to find all sorts of native plants. We will have native perennials, shrubs, trees and even gardening tips. Giveaways include a free drawing for a rain barrel and a compost bin. Please bring your used plastic nursery pots.

Composting at the Vienna Farmers Market

Why waste your food waste? The CSC is proud to announce the continuation of the composting booth at the Vienna Farmers Market.  Beginning Saturday, May 3 from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m., a booth operated by Monster Organics will accept food waste to be dropped off for composting.

Composting is a natural process by which organic waste is broken down into rich nutrient soil.  If you are interested in composting, consider dropping off your food scraps at the Vienna Farmers Market each Saturday through October, and you will be reducing landfill waste while also reducing harmful greenhouse gases from being emitted into the atmosphere.

Preserving and Managing the Town of Vienna’s Tree Canopy

The Conservation and Sustainability Commission undertook a volunteer effort to explore ways the Town of Vienna could enhance its ability to preserve and manage its tree canopy.  We looked at how Vienna could retain, replace, and add trees, particularly in light of increasing teardown/new home development throughout the Town.  Also find a link to Town’s recently released Urban Tree Canopy Assessment.
