On April 10, 2024, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced final national drinking water standards for six types of poly- and perfluoroalkyl substances known collectively as PFAS.  These manmade chemicals are found throughout the environment after decades of use in industrial processes, and they can be harmful to human health at high levels.  The new drinking water standards regulate the maximum containment levels (MCLs) of six PFAS compounds and establishes a health index for four other PFAS compounds.  

Currently, the Town of Vienna purchases drinking water from Fairfax Water, which is distributed by the Town of Vienna’s water utility network to thousands of customers within and just outside Town limits.  The Town of Vienna and Fairfax Water have been voluntarily testing for PFAS and all Town of Vienna drinking water test results show PFAS levels below the MCLs proposed by the EPA. 

PFAS are used in coatings, paints, fabrics, and foams to resist heat, oil stains, grease, and water.  They do not break down naturally and they build up in the environment over time, and water utilities are passive PFAS receivers as a result.   Most humans are exposed to PFAS through food, consumer goods and drinking water. 

The Town of Vienna recognizes that safe drinking water is vital in protecting public health, and the Town will continue to work with Fairfax Water and other regional partners to continue to provide customers with quality drinking water that exceeds federal safety standards.  The Town of Vienna will also continue to stress the importance of protecting local water sources and its role in keeping drinking water supplies safe.

The Town of Vienna provides water service to nearly 5,600 residential and commercial customers, about one-third of whom are located outside of Town limits. The Town distributes treated surface water from the Potomac River and Occoquan Reservoir, which is supplied through the Fairfax County Water Authority and Army Corps of Engineers.  Find information about Vienna's drinking water quality in the Annual Water Quality Report.

In the event that water service must be interrupted due to maintenance or repairs, residents will be notified, if possible, via a door hanger before work begins.  Once water service is restored, it is recommended that homes run cold water for a few minutes from a bathtub or other fixture without an aerator.  This will help ensure that water is clear and that any air is released from water lines.

Through its Capital Improvement Plan, the Town of Vienna has committed to investing in infrastructure improvements to its water and sewer systems to ensure that reliable services continue to be delivered to customers.
