_DSC3574 (2)Civic engagement is a hallmark of the Town of Vienna and part of what makes it such a vibrant community.  Serving as an appointed member of a board or commission or running for Town Council offer two of the most direct ways in which Town residents can help shape the community.  Anyone who feels they have what it takes to represent their neighbors and have a positive impact on the community is encouraged to apply to serve on a board or commission or to run for elected office.

The mayor and Town councilmembers are Vienna’s elected officials.  The next Town Council election will take place on Tuesday, Nov. 7, 2023.  All seven seats will be on the ballot at the same time, rather than the staggered 2-year term cycle in past elections.  Individuals interested in running for a seat on Town Council should visit the Virginia Department of Elections' website for candidate information, required forms, and deadlines.

Candidates for office must meet certain qualifications as set by the Virginia Department of Elections, and are required to file specific documents in order to qualify to appear on the ballot. These qualifications and requirements vary slightly depending on whether the office sought is a local office, General Assembly seat, statewide office, or federal office. Generally, all candidates must meet the following minimum qualifications:

  • Be qualified to vote for and hold the office sought.
  • Be a resident of the Commonwealth of Virginia for one year immediately preceding the election.
  • Be a Town of Vienna resident to run for Town Council.

The Virginia Department of Elections has developed and published candidate informational bulletins specific to each office type.
