The Tree Advocacy Committee is overseen by the Town Conservation and Sustainability Commission and works with the Town Urban Forestry team to advise and assist the Town on matters relating to the conservation and management of the Town’s trees and tree canopy.  Other activities of the TAC include:

  • Making recommendations to the Town Council and Town agencies on the planting and maintenance of trees on public property
  • Working with the Town’s Urban Forestry team to create an Urban Forest Management Plan
  • Assisting the Town’s Urban Forestry team in submitting an annual Urban Forest Report to the Town Council (semi-annually, the first three years)
  • Providing public outreach and education to Town residents on the value of a diversified and sustainable community forest
  • Representing the Town at seminars and conferences relating to urban forestry

 Why a Tree Advocacy Committee?

Between 2011 and 2021, Vienna lost 13% of its tree canopy, including 5,000 mature trees, due to development.  A new Tree Conservation Ordinance was adopted by the Town Council in July 2024 and created the Tree Advocacy Committee.
