Abolition of Slavery.  This amendment explicitly banned slavery and involuntary servitude in the United States, except for as punishment of a crime. This amendment also gave Congress the power to enforce the article through legislation.

Juneteenth Celebration - 11 a.m.-3 p.m. at First Baptist Church of Vienna (450 Orchard St., NW) 

Liberty Amendments Month Opening Ceremony begins at 12 p.m.

Live Music from Earth Wind, and Fire Cover Band, Food Trucks, Craft Vendors, Kids Book Give Away, Kids Games and Activities, Voter Registration and Resources. 

11 a.m. - 3 p.m. - Classic Car Show at James H. Hayes/Bull Run Lodge #529 Elks Lodge: 250 Nutley St. NW.

Monday, June 17:

 

From Idea to Law: How Everyday People Can Influence Change in Virginia - How YOU can become an effective advocate on important issues.
6:30 p.m. at the Vienna Community Center, Community Room

The passage of the Liberty Amendments was the result of the courageous efforts of everyday citizens dedicated to making change. You, too, can become a changemaker in today’s society!

6:30-7:15 - Join Delegate Holly Seibold as she educates attendees on the life cycle of a bill - from inception to implementation - and the inner workings of influencing leaders, voicing concerns, and the efforts required to bring forth change in Virginia.

7:15-8:00 -  Join panelists Michelle Alonso, Susan Stillman, and Irvin Varkonyi from the Vienna community for an interactive panel discussion, moderated by Delegate Holly Seibold, as they share their personal stories about how they were successful in influencing the state legislative process.

Storytime led by VPC Preschool, followed by a performance by Groovy Nate  (kids music).

Juneteenth and Liberty Amendments Day observed. Town offices closed.
